The Problem

Nearly every file uploaded to the internet still crawls through TCP, a 50-year-old protocol that treats 4K video the exact same way it treats email packets.

TCP's reliability scheme limits its throughput inversely with network delay and packet loss. When network loss is detected, TCP reduces its congestion window exponentially. This aggressive back off and slow ramp up limit the TCP window size, severely limiting its long-term throughput and bandwidth utilization. On lossy cellular or satellite networks, this can limit throughput to well under 1% of the network capacity.

In addition to this throughput limitation, traditional file transfer protocols fail to provide the security and predictability required by business-critical data transfers. Uploads, downloads, and transfers must be fully resumable and protected from interception.

Introducing DART

DART (Dynamic Accelerated Record Transfer) is a file transport protocol that maintains near-constant efficiency regardless of network conditions. Over a 100Mbps connection, DART reliably holds ~98Mbps regardless of packet loss, latency, jitter, or erratic bandwidth conditions. That means a file transfer will take the same time regardless of whether it's going to another country or continent.

Built by a team from CERN, DART is a proprietary UDP-based protocol that implements reliability at the application layer. Its cutting edge features include intelligent congestion control, selective retransmission, and dynamic forward error correction. Further technical details and benchmarks are available upon request.
